Mozambique – The Rising Mine

‘The Rising Mine’

Montepuez, Mozambique

Mozambique is a tropical country located in southeastern Africa along the Indian Ocean and is currently the largest new source of rubies in the world today. Rubies were first discovered by local hunters near M’sawize village in 2008, which then led to the discovery in 2009 of a second deposit of high-quality Mozambican rubies in the Montepuez area of the Cabo Delgado province.

Gemfields acquired a 75% stake in the Montepuez ruby deposit in 2012, further consolidating its position as the world’s leading supplier of precious coloured gemstones.

With increasing global market demand for responsibly sourced rubies, combined with the scarcity of traditional Burmese ruby supplies, the Montepuez ruby mine in Mozambique is believed to be the most significant recently discovered ruby deposit in the world, accounting for an estimated 30% of global ruby supply.
